Lithoquest Diamonds (TSX-V: LDI) could not be happier for having just recovered one grey and two yellow micro-diamonds from the +0.1 mm to -0.3 mm size fraction at its North Kimberley Diamond Project, located in the northern region of Western Australia.

The gems were unearthed at target 0702 in the 1,000-square-kilometre property and recovered from a 10.06-kilogram rock sample submitted for kimberlite indicator mineral analysis.

“The recovery of micro-diamonds is extraordinary given that the primary objective of the laboratory process was to extract kimberlite indicator minerals, not diamonds,” said Bruce Counts, President and CEO of Lithoquest, in a press release. “This confirms that rocks present at target 0702 are diamond bearing and reinforces the prospective nature of the North Kimberley Diamond Project. We look forward to the commencement of the 2018 field program that will include drilling to collect samples specifically for micro-diamond testing,” he added.

In detail, the sample that yielded the diamonds was collected in December 2017 from a highly-weathered outcrop of suspected kimberlite. It was included in a group of six samples (two from anomaly 1605 and four from anomaly 0702) submitted for indicator mineral testing. However, no kimberlite indicator minerals or micro-diamonds were obtained from the other five samples submitted.

Diamond miner in Nunavut digging for high-quality gems

In late March, Vancouver-based North Arrow Minerals (TSXV:NAR) reported additional diamond results from Q1-4 kimberlite Naujaat Diamond Project, located 9 kilometres north of Naujaat in Nunavut’s Melville Peninsula.

“The samples were composited from drill core in the field based on observed lithological units and submitted for processing using a combined dense media separation / caustic fusion process intended to recover diamonds greater than 0.425mm. The largest diamond was recovered from unit A28 and weighs 0.25 carats,” the company said in a media statement.

This weekend and talking to the CBC, President and CEO Kenneth Armstrong said that since the site’s mineral resource is estimated around the lines of 30 to 50 carats of diamonds per 100 tonnes of kimberlite, he does not expect large recoveries in terms of quantity and so as he would like the focus to be on finding high-value orange-yellow rocks.

"It's a really unique colour and it's the main thing that's keeping us interested in evaluating this project, if there's enough of those yellow diamonds and enough of them have the kind of quality of the ones that we had polished, they could really make this deposit work," he told the public broadcaster.

North Arrow is still waiting for final results from last year’s sampling program. If promising, the miner plans to hunt for up to $20 million in funding with the idea of collecting 2,000 carats in additional samples.

April 01, 18 by Albert Robinson image (IDEX Online News) – There were relatively few price changes in March, with an equal mix of risers and decliners. There were a particularly small number of changes in categories under 0.50-0.69 carats, while diamonds in the 2.00-2.99 carat, 4.00-4.99 and 5.00-5.99 carat categories saw many risers than decliners.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /?>   Fancy diamonds also saw relatively few price changes, particularly in the smallest categories of under 0.45-0.49 carats and larger diamonds of 4.00-4.99 carats and 5.00-5.99 carats. Diamonds of 0.50-0.69 to 2.00-2.99 carats carats saw a clear downward trend.   The following are some of the changes in this week's IDEX Online Diamond Price Report.   To receive a free copy of the full IDEX Online Diamond Price Report, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Exploration spending in Canada’s poorest regions keeps sliding

Canada’s Northwest Territories and Nunavut, two of the three regions with the lowest income per capita, have experienced a dramatic decline in exploration spending during the last ten years, data from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) shows.

According to NRCan most recent numbers, spending in the N.W.T. is expected to decline to $81.3 million this year, down from $90 million in 2017. Exploration spending in the territory peaked in 2007 at $194 million.

In Nunavut, the situation is even worse. Investment in mineral exploration in Canada’s newest and northernmost territory is expected to fall by more than $58 million. That contrasts with the $169 million the territory received last year and is a far reach from the $338 million companies spent on mining exploration in Nunavut in 2007.

Across the country, instead, mineral exploration and deposit appraisals have picked up. In 2017, spending on both increased almost 30% to 2.1 billion, from $1.6 billion a year earlier. And for this year, NRCan is predicting a further 6%cent increase, to $2.2 billion.

Tom Hoefer, executive director of the N.W.T. and Nunavut Chamber of Mines, believes what’s deterring investors are ongoing disputes over land claims in the Northwest Territories, along with their interim land withdrawals.

"To find a mine you have to be able to explore the ground for it," Hoefer told CBC News.

In Nunavut, in turn, land use permits are being granted and then put on hold due to changing mandates on land use and access related to the Draft Nunavut Land Use Plan, the latest annual global survey of mining executives released in February by the Fraser Institute shows.

Mineral exploration in Canada’s northern regions has led to major discoveries in the past, including Rio Tinto’s Diavik diamond mine, as well as De Beers and Mountain Province Gahcho Kué diamond mine.
