(IDEX Online) - A rare 5.22-carat Kashmir sapphire is expected to fetch up to $480,000 at Bonhams' New York Jewels sale later this month.
The cushion-shaped mixed-cut gem was discovered high up in the Zanskar region of the Himalayas in the 1880s.
It is certified as unheated and is set in a ring with 10 diamonds (approx four carats) in 18k pink and silver-topped gold. It is estimated at $280,000-$480,000.
The rarity of Kashmir sapphires is legendary. Most were mined during a brief window of just seven years, until 1887, and only in the summer months because the snow.
Last December a Kashmir sapphire and diamond brooch, circa 1910, exceeded a high estimate of $800,000 to sell for $1.11m at Bonhams....

(IDEX Online) - Britain must return two Cullinan diamonds from its crown jewels, says a member of South Africa's parliament.
Mbusiyseni Ndlozi, of the left-wing opposition party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) tweeted: "Expropriation of the Queen's crown without compensation: we want our diamonds back!" A tweet claimed the gems had a combined value of $5bn.
The Cullinan I (Star of Africa), a 530.2 carat pendeloque-cut diamond, is set as the main stone in Queen Elizabeth II's Sceptre with Cross.
It was cut from 3,106.75-carat Cullinan Diamond, unearthed at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1905, and presented by the Transvaal provincial government as an extremely generous birthday gift to Britain's King Edward VII.
Among the other gems cut from it is The Cullinan II (Second Star of Africa) which weighs 317.4 carats and which is set in the Imperial State Crown.

(IDEX Online) - Tiffany & Co is launching its first ever range of engagement rings for men.
It says that after introducing the diamond engagement to the world (for women) back in 1886, it's "marking a bold new era of love" with its Charles Tiffany Setting.
That's widely understood to refer to the rise in same-sex marriages.
Six styles are currently on its website, made of platinum or titanium, set with round brilliant or emerald solitaire diamonds, sized between 1.0 carats and 4.3 carats. No prices or further details are given.
The New York-based jeweler, recently acquired by LVMH, says men's engagement rings will be available from this month at is flagship stores.
Tiffany engagement rings for women currently account for over a quarter of the company's total revenue, according to the Wall Street Journal....
